Carpet supply and fitting in Broxbourne and East Hertfordshire
Want help choosing carpet as well as having it fitted? We pass your enquiry to one local fitter who can supply and fit carpet for homes, rented properties and businesses.
What does supply and fit mean?
It means the same person helps you choose the carpet, orders it and lays it, instead of you buying carpet in one place and finding a fitter somewhere else. The fitter we pass enquiries to can supply and fit, as well as lay carpet you have bought yourself.
The main advantage is that the person working out the quantity is the person who will cut and lay it. The plan for each room, the amount ordered and the fitting are all handled together, so there is less room for a gap between what was bought and what the room needs.
How do I choose carpet for each room?
Start with how the room is used rather than the colour. Hallways, living rooms and family spaces take the most foot traffic, so a hard-wearing carpet makes sense there. Bedrooms see less wear, so softer and deeper piles are a common choice. Some general points:
- twist piles are a popular all-rounder and hide footprints reasonably well
- saxony and other long piles feel soft but show marks more and can flatten in busy areas
- loop piles, including Berber styles, are hard-wearing, but pet claws can catch and pull the loops
- wool and wool-rich carpets are naturally resilient and spring back well
- synthetic fibres such as polypropylene and nylon are widely used, and many resist stains well
Colours look different at home than they do under shop lighting, so look at a sample in the room itself, in daylight and in the evening, if you can.
Why does the measure matter so much?
Carpet is cut from rolls of a fixed width, commonly 4 metres or 5 metres. The fitter works out how to cut each room so the pile runs the same way, joins are kept to a minimum and away from busy walkways, and waste is kept sensible. When several rooms are done together, an offcut from one room can sometimes cover a smaller space such as a cupboard or a landing.
Two quotes for the same house can show different quantities because each fitter plans the cuts differently. When you compare, look at how the rooms are planned, not just the total.
What should a supply and fit quote cover?
It helps to ask for the same details from anyone quoting so you can compare fairly:
- the carpet name, fibre and colour, the quantity and the roll width
- the type and thickness of underlay
- gripper, door bars and threshold strips
- whether lifting and taking away the old flooring is included
- whether moving furniture is included
- any preparation of the floor underneath
- how stairs are priced, if there are any
- when the carpet can be ordered and fitted
Does the floor underneath need any work?
Sometimes. Floorboards that creak or are uneven can be screwed down or covered with hardboard so the lines do not show through the new carpet. Concrete floors need to be dry and reasonably flat, because damp can damage underlay and carpet over time. Old adhesive or fixings left behind by a previous floor may need removing. The fitter can tell you whether anything is needed once they have seen the floor.
Is supply and fit available for businesses?
Yes, enquiries from businesses are welcome as well as from homes. Offices, shops, waiting rooms and rented properties all have different needs. Busy commercial areas often use carpet tiles, which are laid in squares so a worn or stained tile can be replaced on its own. Landlords between tenancies often want a durable, neutral carpet fitted quickly. If the work has to happen in the evening or at a weekend so the business can keep trading, say so in your enquiry and ask whether that is possible.
What should I tell the fitter?
Give the number of rooms and their rough sizes, the look you have in mind, any budget you are working to, and whether you have pets or young children. Mention underfloor heating, because it affects which underlay is suitable. Say whether you are a homeowner, a landlord or a business.
What happens after I send an enquiry?
We pass your enquiry, with your consent, to one local carpet and flooring fitter who covers your postcode, never to a list of companies. They get in touch to discuss what you want, arrange to see the rooms if needed and give you a price directly. You choose whether to go ahead.
It is free to ask and there is no obligation. We are an independent enquiry service, not a carpet retailer or flooring company, and the fitter may pay us a fee for the introduction.
